Hello everyone
Recently the Band’s Land Management office sent out their 2020 brochure along with this year’s service fee invoice.
Originally we expected a letter would be sent before Christmas to all land-lease cottage owners with information pertaining to a number of important issues, most important among them a description of the Band’s expectations re: septic systems code compliance. Information on septic system compliance and a number of additional items is included in the 2020 brochure.
The brochure also lists times of operation for the Works Department land fill. The brochure mailed to everyone had an error in that it listed times for two Saturdays. The second Saturday listed should be Friday with operating hours of 8 to noon. There is a corrected version of the brochure posted here.
Please also note that items that can be recycled are listed in the Brochure and remain unchanged from last year. Last year the Band adopted a policy of not stopping to collect recycle boxes if it was obvious that non-recycle items had been included – most notable would be cardboard. So we ask that you, family members and friends using your cottage take extra care to include only recycle materials in your blue boxes. We expect the same policy to continue this year.
We have received a number of questions about the size of the increase in service fees this year.
Previously, SCOI has requested that the Band increase the service fees in smaller increments each year rather than periodically implementing a larger fee increase. We will be making enquiries to see why this is not being done and try to get some sense of what contributes to the size of the increase.
The Band offices are closed now for the next 3 weeks due to COVID19.
Once we have more information we will relay that to you. In the meantime you should submit the service fee by the deadline.
Amendment to Dump Hours on Brochure
Please note that there has been a correction to the dump hours on the 2020 brochure since it was mailed.
The amended brochure is shown here.
Reminder: Service Fees are due by April 1st, 2020.

The 2020 Services and Updates Brochure has been mailed to all leaseholders from the Band.
Notes
- Once again there will be no heavy garbage pickup. Large items can be delivered to the dump and the fees for these items have also not changed since last year.
- Items than can be blue box recycled are listed in the brochure and remain the same as last year.
The list of recyclables is also available here.
Unfortunately many cottagers and their guests fail to limit the items they put in the recycle bin which in turn causes added time (delay and cost) to the Band’s recycle pickup schedule. Please adhere to the list and please also advise you family and friends to do the same.
- Please also make note of and preferably post in a visible location, the Cancon Security, OPP and Fire Department phone numbers that are listed in the brochure.
These numbers are also available by clicking Contact / Contact Security from the main menu at the top this website.
For emergencies please call 911.
This is a 14%. Normally I would expect an explanation for this (ie capital infrastructure improvement, increased service, more recyclables being accepted). Except we seem to be getting less for more.
Is this acceptable or are we just suppose to suck it up. Of course as I write this salaries are being slashed due to the conoravirus pandemic. Trying times.
Please refer to our post of March 24, 2020.
Did I miss it?
What is the fee for this year?
$1,000
I have not received my service fee invoice yet, can you tell me the new amount.
This year’s service fee is $1,000.
After 3 years of being a member and numerous requests to have the newsletter sent via email this has not happened to date. Are there issues updating such requests?

My answer from Kirk Roote The chief & council set the rates & we follow their lead. The rates haven’t increased since 2017 so it was time for the increase. Our works dept. Cost of operations increased last year & slowly filtered onto all programs & leased areas.
The service cost jump seems high but they do a good job. I know they (don’t) clean the beaches like before but they also do (not) have the income from the beach people (thank god).
The bigger question is what is the cost of new leases after we spend all this money on septics
I believe that the band is trying to do their best to manage costs and provide adequate services including road maintenance. I am situated on Thompson Rd. close to French Bay Rd. and have no issues at my location. However, the road condition of 2nd Ave. north of French Bay in the vicinity of the Trading Post is not good and this stretch is in bad need of a repaving–the potholes have been filled and refilled. Can we get an update rom the band on when this section of road is due for re surfacing? thanks.
Actually, I disagree with that. Long time cottager, the last few years, I will come back up and the garbage from last weekend is still in the bin. Last summer I had the fortune of some extended time, and sometimes it was days before they came by to collect. It’s an issue because it sits out there in the bin, for animals to find a way to get at.
Further , and especially , all the damage wreaked on the beach by the high water levels combined with the cancellation of both spring and fall big garbage clean ups, makes it difficult to deal with all the debris that appears in the spring and after a big storm.
