Word from the Chief
Friends:
I want to thank all of you for your great patience in this challenging time. This has been a unique spring for all of us.
I am happy to inform you that in a video posted to Facebook today Friday, May 29, 2020, Chief Anoquot says, “Cottagers are allowed to attend their cottages and start this weekend to get them ready for the summer season.“
This means you are free to access your cottage immediately.
The Chief also says “Sauble Beach (SFN Beaches) will remain closed until safety concerns over erosion are addressed. Please be patient.”
We are aware of erosion issues on some properties. If you have concerns after visiting your cottage, please contact Kirk Roote (email: kirk.roote@saugeen.org or 519.797.3039).
The order of the Medical Officer of Health closing all municipal beaches in Grey Bruce has been lifted. This does not apply to SFN Beaches.
We remind you that the provincial rules for the State of Emergency still apply:
- Maintain 6′ of separation
- Wear a mask if you cannot socially distance
- No more that five people may gather in one place.
- Wash your hands frequently
- Refrain from unnecessary travel
There is currently no restriction on fires, but we ask you to be careful.
Thank you again for your patience. We will see you at Sauble this summer!

I just listened to the Chief’s May 29 update. It sounded to me he was saying cottagers could go to their cottages this weekend to prepare for the summer.
I think we need clarification re his latest statement..
Please see today’s post.
Further to my first comment…. can we stay at our cottages from now on or just visit them this weekend…. (not sleep there). The Chief’s words were chosen carefully. “Attend your cottage to prepare for the season”.
You can stay from now on.
Great news!! Do you know if family members can come up? Or just the owners?
The rules for cottage living at this time are the same as those you’ve been directed to follow at home.
Thanks folks, for doing a great job in keeping us informed! Happy Summer !
What does the beach closure mean for cottage owners on the beach?
Surely we can begin a spring cleanup of the beach in front of our cottages?
At this point, Dave, we’re afraid the answer is no.
based on what ive seen of most of the beach its only about a foot wide
Could you clarify foot wide? I’m just curious. I have not seen any pics. I’m not right on the water but the beach was probably 50 feet I think. Has that all washed away? Hope not
There are shoreline photos posted on May 8. Please see https://scoi.ca/photos-of-the-shoreline-may-8-2020/.
I’m along Thompson ave. Do you or any people have photos ? Last year parts of the leased property was still flooded and damp until June. Sorry to bother you. We are new up there. So just trying to understand everything. Ty kindly.
Sorry Matt, we don’t have any pics for you. Maybe one of your neighbours will see your post and send them in.
Thanks to all for communications and the Chief and Band for keeping us up to date. We are looking forward to arriving on Monday!
This is great news, but I am not sure why after repeated inquiries about going up this weekend were met with a resounding “No”, that now we have permission. Once again, it makes it difficult for people to plan ahead.
We post what we’re told at any given time. No organization, municipality or region has been through anything like this pandemic before so decision making at all levels is fraught with challenges.
We are confused about the status of the French Bay beach. Is it open or closed?
French Bay Beach is closed.
Great news. Do you know if the Saugeen Landfill will be open June 6th?
We assume Band operations will be open again beginning June 1st and expect the Landfill to be open regular Saturday hours on June 6th.
I just received an email today from Kirk Roote advising that there is a further delay until June 9th. He mentioned we could open our cottages now though. I am confused. Can we open our cottage but not stay overnight. Clarification would be appreciated.
We refer you to the Chief’s Facebook message. “Cottagers are allowed to attend their cottages and start this weekend to get ready for the Summer season.”
We believe cottagers are now able to return to their cottages to visit or to stay.
I have been trying for a week to contact Saugeen Driftwood to get the internet connected. Does anyone know when the office will be open?
