A Message from SCOI President

Today, the Province of Ontario announced a province wide shutdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The lockshutdown takes effect at 12:01 AM on December 26, 2020 and will last 28 days, when it will be reviewed.

The announcement said, in part, On the advice of the Chief Medical Officer of Health, all Ontarians are advised to stay home as much as possible with trips outside the home limited to necessities such as food, medication, medical appointments, or supporting vulnerable community members.

Chief Anoquot of Saugeen First Nation announced today that a positive case of Covid-19 has been reported in the community by the Grey Bruce Public Health Unit. Testing is continuing and contact tracing is underway. When I asked Chief Anoquot if the reserve would return to the same closed state of last spring, he replied, “community closure is our  only option.

While we have not received a formal notice from the Band regarding closure, given the advice of the Chief Medical Officer of Health today and the advice from Chief Anoquot that the only option is to return the reserve to a closed
state, we wish to advise cottagers that they should not make plans for spending time at their cottages from today until we receive word that we are permitted on the reserve and have access to our cottages. Cottagers who are at their cottages now should leave for other accommodation. It would be a reasonable assumption that a closure would be enforced by Cancom Security with a request to leave and the potential of a ticket being issued.

These are not easy times for any of us. Please follow the advice Public Health on washing your hands, wearing a mask, watching your distance and stay home as much as possible. We all want better times ahead and, like you, we can’t wait for the summer breeze and the sound of waves on the shore. But not yet.

Stay home and stay safe.
