Many of you will have noticed that quite a bit of the recycle material that was placed out at the roadside this week has not been collected. The reason for this is that people continue to ignore the Band’s list of things that can be recycled. This makes it very labour intensive and time consuming for Works Department staff since they have to sort through almost every blue bin and bag to remove the material they cannot recycle. This was a short week and they could not get to everyone.
To insure that recyclables are collected on time each week, the Works department has indicated it will only collect recyclables from those cottages that have taken the time to make sure the right stuff is in the bin/bag.
Bins/bags that include garbage (paper, boxboard, cardboard and glass) will be left behind for the cottage owner (or their family and friends) to deal with.
We would ask that cottagers take more care in sorting to be sure the right stuff gets included and the rest goes into garbage. We also ask that you take responsibility for telling family members and friends who are using your cottage what should go in the blue bin and what does not.
Not everyone is a cottage association member and not everyone subscribes to this website. So we would ask that you also make your neighbours aware of this change.
Thank you for your compliance and for helping us spread the word.
What To Recycle
- Tin/aluminum cans
- plastic food containers with recycle numbers 1 through 7
- beer, liquor and wine bottles that get recycled through the beer store
What NOT To Recyle
- paper
- cardboard
- boxboard
- glass
This makes the folks who follow the rules are stuck with the recycling. Don’t believe this solves the issues
Unless they take the time to actually stop and look in the bin how do they know that there are unrecyclable items in it? Only plastics in mine and not picked up!
I have found, after being up here for a few years, that it is confusing to know what can and can’t be recycled. The list in the Saugeen Services and Updates pamphlet isn’t specific enough. I come from a town where there is an itemized list and pictures of what is recyclable. Maybe this will help with the problem. I fear that if this education doesn’t happen then people will just throw out their recyclables.
Please feel free to use the website search (upper right of all pages). You will find this post from May 2017, updated each year since, clearly outlining what is and is not acceptable in the SFN recycling bins.
We have simplified things further here recently.
So are water bottles considered food containers? Cause that’s all that was in mine and they didn’t take it. Maybe I was a victim of the short week?
It is likely you were caught up in the short week last week but you should check to see if the water bottles have a recycle number 1 to 7 on them.
My parents left out the recycling bin last week and when we arrived this week it wasn’t picked up, because someone has added their non-recyclables to the top of our bin.
I’m disappointed in my neighbours for being too lazy to read the rules and then spoiling our bin with their shoe box and other recyclables.
Why is glass not recycled but glass bottles that can be returned to the beer store allowable?
For some time now (paper products – 3yrs & glass – 2yrs) the band has been unable to find a contractor willing to take their paper and glass recycles. Beer, liquor and wine bottles can be recycled through the beer store. The Beer Store has sufficient volume and delivery/pickup systems as well as a contract with the Province to continue recycling these items.
Ok thanks for your reply. Too bad about availability of contractors.
