Soft Opening
In his most recent update on Facebook on August 8, 2020 Chief Anoquot informs us that starting Monday August 10 there will be a soft opening of Sauble Park.
Waste containers will go out and students have been hired.
This may mean more traffic to the beach for the rest of the summer and potential parking challenges.
If you have beach or parking concerns, please call Cancon Security 519-379-4760
.
What is the difference between a soft opening & what has been happening at the beach all summer? Non-cottagers have been using beach & have not been stopped by the security guy at all. They park along 16th St from 2nd Ave to the hwy. one lady parked on 2nd Ave right under a no parking sign & then she & her dog walked down to the beach for the afternoon. A security car drove right by it & didn’t stop to issue a warning or write a ticket! I haven’t seen many security on atv’s patroling the beach this year either. Thanks
This is a shame.
The beach, all summer, has been clean and without garbage. Cottagers pack out what they pack in. The beach and the dunes have been healing.
It has been our experience, in past years, that with the beach open To the general public, the amount of garbage increases significantly as well as other issues involving encroachment on private properties, disrespect for the dunes and the beach in general.
What is the reasoning behind the opening? The beach has been busy enough with just cottagers.
Will the band shut the beach down if things get crazy? Just look at Wasaga and other beaches and the issues they are having.
Again..a real shame.
The beach is already at capacity with just the cottagers of South Sauble, the beach itself cannot withstand much more. The dunes are deteriorating and the worry of flooding with high winds and heavy rains is a concern. We have not seen any sign of environmental protection for this beach, many of us have tried to do our best to keep people off the dunes but that shouldn’t just be the responsibility of owners considering the amount of money we pay, so disappointed with the non effort to keep this beach environmentally protected.
That’s too bad. The beach has stayed so nice and clean thus far far this year in terms of being garbage free. I see that changing again now…….
This has been the best summer yet and we have attributed that to the chief’s decision in 2018 to allow the beach to become natural again and to prevent vehicles with tourists who have no respect. They have violated with amplified “music”,garbage strewn all over, disrespect for our First Nations landlords, peeing and pooping in the sand and cottage yards.
We appreciate the Chief’s actions. He has managed the pandemic safety issues well. Let us continue as we are. Best Park ever!

I agree with all of the comments above. There where cars parked all the way up 16th in NO PARKING areas. The beach was packed around 16 th. There was no more room for more people on the beach. There where people on the beach so out of it on POT that they where extremely unsafe with children around them. Already vehicles parking in other areas where there are NO PARKING signs as well. There has been a lot of issues in the past with people playing extremely loud music, putting toilets in tents. Etc etc. Generally very disrespectful all around. Cottagers pay very high leases and why do they have to put up with this nonsense. Cottagers are selling as they are getting fed up with it. Cottagers call the security company and nothing is being done…… extremely disappointed as South Sauble is already packed so much that the Cottagers who pay the leases don’t want to go to the beach and at times there is no room for Cottagers.
It is a shame that they are opening up.
As my husband and I took a walk from the main drag along the beach to the Driftwood and the disrespect for the beach was awefull. Garbage was left in many area’s.
Please keep beach closed, as we cottagers respect the beach.
Call Cancom with concerns? That’s a joke! They don’t do anything about keeping people off the beach that aren’t supposed to be there, preventing drinking, smoking, littering, dogs running around. I’ve actually called a couple of times with concerns, and they still don’t do anything. It’s a waste of the Band’s money. Maybe with the soft opening, at least there’ll be garbage cans so hopefully that will cut down on the littering, so less cleaning up for me to have to do.
SCOI has reported these concerns to CanCom and received the following response.
Well this is as a result of your soft opening. We were away on Saturday and upon our return on Sunday we went down to the beach to swim. In the dunes in front of our deck there had been a fire.upon further inspection we found half buried tinfoil with food in it, charcoal briquettes, lots of cigarette butts of a questionable type. Upon further search we discovered the firewood was stollen from our wood pile!
I was also informed by our neighbours that there were 4 skidoo’s coming in and out very close to shore and drinking beer and throwing beer cans and bottles in the lake. He told them to pick them up and so far we have not found any in the lake. Also there seems to be no rules about dogs on the beach. Last week one chased my husband into the lake. I have not seen any security on the beach near French Bay road this summer. People can do as they please and nothing happens.
The beach has been the best it has been in many ,many years. yes there is always room for improvement regarding security and non cottagers but in general great.
Will the Band be charging the public because of the added expenses? Not looking forward to the mayhem and disrespect the majority of these people bring with the ” I am only here for the day attitude “.
I was under the impression that by the time the Band pays for added security, garbage removal, clean up etc. they really don’t profit from opening to the general public.
Would anyone else ( cottagers ) be willing to pay some more on our lease to keep use of the beach for cottagers? Much like it is now!
Or perhaps the band could let the public use a portion of the beach near the downtown public beach at a cost per day.
This is sad news. The beach has been in very good shape for much of the summer but word travels fast and in the past couple of weeks, it has been easy to see just how the “non-cottagers” are treating the beach. Not only are they leaving garbage behind but they are also using the beach (and the dunes) as their own public washroom.
When “non-cottagers” come for the day, they need washroom facilities. They can’t eat and drink all day with no facilities. If this can’t be provided, the beach should not be opened to the public.
The cottagers respect and appreciate the beach. Is there a reason it has to be opened to the public particularly if there is no monetary value to the Band for doing so?
I don’t want to see my annual fees increase because upkeep to the beach is necessary for “non-cottagers”.
